The Shanghai Cooperation Organization Heads of State Council meeting in a narrow format

June 9, 2017

The Head of the State noted that over the 16 years of its development the Shanghai Cooperation Organization had gained international recognition and became an effective platform for multi-profile cooperation.

- Significant work has been done to strengthen security in the region, deepen economic cooperation and expand cultural and humanitarian cooperation between our countries. International treaty framework has been formed. Strong institutional foundations have been created, and its regional and global influence is growing, Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

The President of Kazakhstan stressed that the Summit in Astana marks the beginning of the Organization’s new history.

- The current meeting is being held for the last time in a six-sided format. Today we will sign the decisions on completing the procedure for admission and granting the status of the SCO member states to the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. Admission of new members will give a powerful impetus to the development of the Organization and will contribute to the growth of its international authority, the Head of the State said.

Nursultan Nazarbayev has emphasized that currently the SCO's activities take into account the latest trends in geopolitics and the basic trends in the global economy.

- There is a consistent work underway to gradual accomplishment of key goals and effective implementation of all joint decisions. Special emphasis is given to overcoming new challenges and threats to stability and security. In particular, as part of the Summit it is planned to adopt the Statement on joint counteraction to international terrorism and the signing of the Convention on Countering Extremism. This will be the SCO’s significant contribution to fighting this global evil, the President of Kazakhstan concluded.
