Participation in the Council of Heads of CIS member-states in the expanded format

October 16, 2015

In the speech, President Nursultan Nazarbayev said the Council meeting in the narrow format addressed the issues of the current state and future prospects of the CIS development.

“It’s not a secret that today the world is undergoing major changes. First of all, we are talking about economic and security issues. The CIS must evolve and adapt to new realities, respond to global changes and challenges effectively,” he said.

The President noted that one of the major topics of the previous discussion was the situation in the sphere of international security.

“It is necessary to note the intensification of terrorist groups, whose activities undermine the foundations of the existing world order. It is necessary to stress that international terrorism has a very destructive effect on the situation in many countries and regions. The escalation of violence led to increase in the civilian death toll, mainly among women and children,” he said.

Nursultan Nazarbayev stressed that leaders of the Commonwealth countries support the need for timely and effective measures to minimize terrorist threats.

“As I have said from the high rostrum of the UN General Assembly, it is necessary to establish a global network on combating terrorist organizations with the approval of the Organization. We must strengthen our work in this direction and maximize the potential of the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center. Therefore, I believe that today’s adoption of the statement of the heads of CIS member-states on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the United Nations and on the fight against international terrorism is timely and relevant,” he added.
