Nursultan Nazarbayev visits Ice Arena in Almaty

Nursultan Nazarbayev got acquainted with the sports facility that will host the Winter Universiade opening and closing ceremonies in 2017.

While at the Arena, the President was informed about key indicators of socio-economic development of the city, the pace of road construction works within the Nurly Zhol economic programme, as well as the innovation cluster and special economic zone titled Park of innovative technologies.

The President was also informed about the construction of the Universiade venues and the work done for the organization of international competition. According to the Directorate for the preparation of the 28th World Winter Universiade, the operational budget of the event has been optimized up to 17 billion tenge.

Nearly 2,000 athletes from 55 countries across the world are expected to come to take part in the competition, which will be held in 12 disciplines. The sportsmen will be placed in a specially built Athletic village - the first in the history of the Winter Universiade. Currently, 34 participating countries have already registered online for the Games.

About 30,000 tourists and foreign visitors are expected to come during the competition, while 1 billion viewers in 80 countries will be watching the Universiade.

Ice Arena in Almaty is part of sports facilities built for the 28th World Winter Universiade in 2017 and is designed for 12 thousand spectators. The construction and installation work is to be completed in October 2016. Currently, 1,500 workers are involved in the construction.
