Presentation of conception of Astana EXPO-2017 architectural project

February 28, 2014

During the presentation held at Akorda by the “Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture LLP” company, the winner of the architectural competition, the President noted that the EXPO-2017 would become the largest international event to host in Astana for the first time in its history.

“This building will change the city’s image. I got acquainted with all projects offered by 50 participants of the competition. We selected 10 best projects and then chose the “Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture LLP” company. The winner has experience not only in the field of construction but also in the sphere of green economy,” the President highlighted.

Nursultan Nazarbayev pointed out that the chosen project would become a green energy example and later all construction should be based on this experience.

“It will be a good example both for Kazakhstan and the entire region. This huge complex will produce electricity and with good sun and wind it can even generate energy for the city. It is a unique project and we will realize it for the first time,” Nursultan Nazarbayev said.

The President also laid an emphasis on the fact that all facilities must be used for the benefit of the people after EXPO-2017.

Adrian Smith, founder of the “Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture LLP” architectural company informed that the main source of the alternative energy for the EXPO-2017 centre would be solar energy.

Minister of Environment and Water Resources Nurlan Kapparov told that Adrian Smith has been working in this sphere already for 45 years. For this time he created five design projects from world’s top 12 tallest skyscrapers, including Burj Khalifa in Dubai and the Kingdom Towers in Saudi Arabia.

“As a whole we can approve the project. Implementation of this project is a great responsibility for us. We will invite not only two million visitors but demonstrate the use of high technologies in the constriction sphere. The EXPO Centre will promote Astana worldwide. And the future EXPO Centre will become one of the favourite entertainment for residents and visitors of the capital city,” the President concluded.
